Message ads and conversation ads are ad formats under Sponsored Messaging. These ads appear in the LinkedIn Messaging of your target audience. The ads are shown on desktop and mobile devices, and only when members are active on LinkedIn. With message ads you can display a targeted message with 1 action button. With conversation ads you can set up multiple action buttons that link to your landing pages, open a lead gen form, or drive engagement with more information in the next message.
LinkedIn recently rolled out a change to the ad format, replacing the old message ads with improved conversation ads. This change affects all advertisers using the message ad format.
Once the change is fully rolled out, the message ad format will no longer be available. All existing campaigns with message ads will automatically be converted to the new conversation ads format once it becomes available. This means the ad type is switched automatically, but the content will need to be manually adjusted for the campaign to run successfully.
To preserve the current target audience of the campaign, we recommend copying your message ads campaign before switching to the new format. This way you can keep the targeting and settings while making use of the improved conversation ads at the same time.
The next step is creating new ads and launching a campaign using the conversation ads format. This new format gives users more options for engaging in interactive conversations with the target audience. For example, it becomes possible to use multiple call-to-action buttons, ask users questions, and respond directly to their answers.
A message confirms that you've started the new conversation ads campaign. New ads are reviewed and shown once approved. Once the new conversation ads campaign has been approved and started, it's important to pause your message ads campaign. This prevents duplicate ad campaigns from being active during the transition period. Keep in mind that replacing an existing message ads campaign with a conversation ads campaign is a manual process and can only be done for 1 campaign at a time.
We'd also like to point out that the new and improved version of the conversation ads format is being rolled out gradually and may not yet be available to everyone. Be patient and keep an eye on your LinkedIn ad management for updates on when you'll get access to this new format.
Finally, if you use EU targeting in your ad campaigns, it's important to know that conversation ads cannot target members located within the European Union (EU). If a campaign includes both EU and non-EU targeting, the campaign will continue to show ads to audiences outside the EU.
LinkedIn is making advertising even easier with the introduction of improved conversation ads. This new format offers more options for engaging in interactive, compelling conversations with your target audience.
