HubSpot Service Hub vs Zendesk, Intercom and Freshdesk

Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk and HubSpot Service Hub all do the same basic job: catch incoming questions, route them to the right person and resolve them. The choice is not about who has the longest feature list. It is about where your customer data lives and who will administer the system.

This page replaces three older comparisons on this site and was updated in October 2026.

Short answer

  • Zendesk if support is its own department with its own processes and high volume. The most mature pure help desk platform.
  • Intercom if most questions arrive through in-app chat and you want to lean heavily on AI resolution.
  • Freshdesk if you want a solid help desk at the lowest price and have few other requirements.
  • HubSpot Service Hub if you already run marketing or sales in HubSpot, or want support working on the same customer record without an integration.

If you run nothing in HubSpot and support is your only question, Service Hub is rarely the cheapest or the deepest option. We say that as a HubSpot partner.

What does it cost?

List prices as of October 2026, per user per month billed annually. Note the different currencies: each vendor publishes in its own.

The catch no comparison mentions

HubSpot Service Hub has seat minimums. Professional requires five seats, Enterprise ten. With three support agents you pay for five, and Enterprise starts at $1,500 per month before you use anything. On top of that comes one-time onboarding: $1,500 on Professional, $3,500 on Enterprise.

Zendesk, Freshdesk and Intercom charge per actual agent. For a small support team that is a real price difference, and you cannot read it from the table above.

AI resolution is billed separately

All four now sell an AI agent, and none of them include it in the seat price.

  • Intercom Fin charges from $0.99 per resolved conversation. Intercom calls this an "outcome" and counts it even when the conversation is handed to a human.
  • HubSpot Breeze Customer Agent has charged fifty credits per resolved conversation since April 2026, roughly $0.50. Professional includes 3,000 credits, Enterprise 5,000.

At volume this adds up fast. Ten thousand resolved conversations a year is nearly $10,000 extra on Intercom. Model this before you decide on seat price, because it is often the larger line item.

The difference that actually matters

Zendesk, Freshdesk and Intercom are help desks with a CRM integration. HubSpot Service Hub is a CRM with a help desk inside it.

That sounds like wordplay, but it shapes your daily work. Take an example: a customer emails about an invoice. You want to know which package they have, who owns the account, whether there is an open deal and whether marketing sent them a campaign last week.

In HubSpot that sits on the same record. In the other three it comes from an integration, if there is one and if it is current.

The reverse holds too. Zendesk has deeper SLA rules, richer queueing and more reporting on support performance than Service Hub. With a fifty-person support department and layered escalations, you will hit a ceiling in HubSpot sooner.

How to choose without stacking up demos

Three questions, in this order. They filter faster than any feature list.

1. Where does your customer data live today? If it is already in HubSpot, every other choice costs you an integration and its upkeep. If it sits in Salesforce or an ERP, most of that Service Hub advantage disappears.

2. How do questions arrive? Mostly email and forms: all four will do. Mostly in-app chat: Intercom was built for it. Phone as the primary channel: look at Zendesk or a separate telephony integration.

3. How many people work in it? Under five: watch the HubSpot minimums. Over fifty: watch SLA and queue depth, where Zendesk leads.

When Service Hub is not the right choice

We are a HubSpot partner, so this section belongs here.

  • Support is your only question and your team is small. Freshdesk Growth is $19 per agent with no minimum. That beats Service Hub on price, full stop.
  • You need heavy SLA structures. Multiple escalation tiers, calendars per customer segment, resolution guarantees per product type: Zendesk goes deeper.
  • You have run a configured help desk for years. A migration has to return something. "Everything in one place" only counts as an argument if you actually use that place for the rest.
  • Your customer data lives elsewhere and stays there. Then you are not buying Service Hub's main advantage.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Zendesk and HubSpot Service Hub?
Zendesk is a help desk you connect to your CRM. Service Hub is a module inside a CRM. Zendesk goes deeper on support processes, Service Hub on customer context.

Is Intercom more expensive than the rest?
On seat price Intercom sits mid-range. The difference comes from Fin, its AI agent, which bills per resolved conversation. At volume that climbs quickly.

Does HubSpot Service Hub have a free version?
There is a free tier with basic tickets and a shared inbox, included with the free CRM. Automation, SLAs and the knowledge base require Professional at minimum.

What is the cheapest alternative?
Freshdesk Growth at $19 per agent per month, with no seat minimum.

Can I connect Zendesk to HubSpot?
Yes, an integration syncs tickets and contacts. A common middle ground when support stays in Zendesk but everything else runs in HubSpot.

Does HubSpot also charge per AI conversation?
Yes. Breeze Customer Agent uses fifty credits per resolved conversation, roughly $0.50. Professional includes 3,000 credits, Enterprise 5,000.
